Really great ideas about searching the Net here.
I've been plagued by the same thoughts. Here's my solution:

I spent about twentyfive minutes looking at this site and at a few of the pages to which it provides links. I had the impression that the work of Lifantsev deserves to be studied intensively. It seems possible that after such study I would propose that this discussion group (SCFN with CORBA, of which I am the moderator) would throw its weight (not more than that of a feather at this time) behind Maxim Lifantsev's Open GRiD Project (Open Global Ranking Search Engine and Directory Project).
It's a very interesting idea; I'm an Open Directory Editor, and you're right about the limitations of ODP. If you can set up something better, I'm sure many people will join you...
I've just read it - it's just what the Net needs. I particularly like the idea of customers being able to tell other people what they think of a company's products - wahheyy! watch those Microsoft stocks crash!
