So, to summarize, our design is related to many other research activities in the area of multimedia streaming, but at the same time is different from other known solutions. Our weakest point is that we do not support standard Internet protocols ( to simplify the first implementation ), but our design does not have any technical limitations which preclude that support. From the other side we have several features that are not found most other implementations:
Metadata server is separate from content delivery ( push ) servers. At the same time the storage in separate locations may be redundant, which helps to decrease the network utilization by selecting the nearest location for the playback, thus allowing the use of video server in department's network without disturbing other applications. We also use higher resolution video than Internet sites may afford.
High-level access capabilities based on closed captions are supported
The solution is portable and does not require specialized hardware to operate.
Both real-time broadcast and playback-on-demand are supported.
