CSE 534 Computer Networks, FALL 2003

Course Description

This is an introductory graduate-level computer network course, with a focus on network protocol design and network subsystem implementation techniques. This course will not cover socket programming or any distributed systems programming techniques such as Remote Procedure Call, CORBA, or Microsoft's .NET.

In this course, we will cover the standard network protocol design issues, but with an emphasis on the associated system implementation issues. The course will have two mid-terms, two homeworks, and a final project. The homeworks will be a combination of NS simulations and actual system implementations. The idea of these exercises is to get the students' hands dirty and to allow them to appreciate the nuts and bolts of carrying out computer networking research. No late homeworks beyond the official deadline will be accepted. In addition, students are organized as teams of at most three persons to design and implement a substantial network subsystem. Students are expected to submit a monthly progress report for their final project. In the end, each team needs to make a 20-minute presentation of their results to the class. In addition, every team is asked to turn in a publication-quality research paper documenting the experiments, results, and analysis.

The grade will be based on: 30% Homework, 30% Midterms, 10% Progress Reports, and 30% Final Report. Any cheating in midterms and homeworks automatically results in an "F" grade. The workload is estimated to be about 10 hours per week, excluding the project effort. The first class is on 9/4/2003 (Thursday).
